Best Irish accent

Morris told us his story: "I only have one little story from my time in Dublin. I never managed to get anywhere near speaking with an irish accent. I sometimes tried, but failed miserably. Only one time somebody actually thought, I was Irish (Even though in this moment, I didn´t try). I was sitting in a taxi after a night of heavy drinking. I was so drunk, I slumped into the footwell of the backseat. Face in the dirt and completely wasted, I started rambling some senseless gibberish. When I told the taxi-driver I was from Cologne, Germany he wouldn´t believe it and told me, this was the best Dublin accent he had ever heard from a non-Irish person in his whole life." :-)

Shane McGowan & his lost money

Nenagh. One night a taxi brought me home and when I asked the driver for his most famous passenger he came up with this story. He had picked up Shane McGowan from the airport late in the evening and was asked to bring him to his local pub "Phil Ryans" in Nenagh which is around 170km away from the fair city.

Obviously Shane had his usual drink in the car which had been a bottle of vodka at that time. During the journey he phoned his local to confirm that he was on his way and that they should leave the back door open and prepare sandwiches for him. Once they had reached their destination around midnight, the pub staff took care of Shane. The driver turned around to head back to Dublin. On his way he stopped at a filling station to get some coffee and "to clean up the mess" in the car when he realised that Shane had left a bag behind on the back seat with 250.000€ in it.

With no other option than to turn around again, he drove back to the pub, delivered the money and received a nice reward of 500€, in Shane's words: "Treat yourself and your family to a nice dinner". Slainte!

Taxis of Dublin

Dublin. After 10 years living and commuting in and around Dublin/Ireland I have decided to start blogging about my experiences with Dublin taxi drivers and write about their never ending stories.

Going forward every time I use a taxi I will ask the driver about VIPs in their cars, embarrassing incidents and delightful moments and hopefully get a picture or small video of them as well.

If you have similar stories to tell which you like to share with the rest of us, please let me know.

To be continued! :-)
